Sermon Passage: Romans 7:10-12
Sermon Title: The Law of God
Sermon By: Pastor Davy (Youth)
Sermon Summary:
The Law of God was given to Moses at Mt.Sinai for a purpose and function. Paul in this passage is struggling with the relationship between law and sin. To Paul, it is because of the law that he has sinned. in verse 7, Paul says if the law had not said “you shall not covet” he would not have known what it is to covet. So if we did not have laws, we, indeed, would not have sin. But this is only when we do not understand the purpose and the function of the law of God. The Israelites had the similar problem. They tried and tried to follow the law thinking that obeying the law itself would lead them to life. But we find in our passage today that Paul realizes that God, knowing that we would not be able to obey his laws perfectly, did not intend for us to obey the law perfectly. But God, in his all-knowing power, gave the law so that through our struggle of trying to obey the law perfectly, we would realize our sinfulness and in response to our sinfulness, turn to God for help. We must realize that in our sin, we cannot even follow simple rules set forth by God. So the purpose of the law, indeed, is to give life. Because the function of the law is to point us back to God who is the giver of life and the law. Later in the chapter, in verse 24-25, Paul comes to a realization of the truth that is so important to the Christian life. “Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” And through this we know, that the law that Israelites could not obey perfectly, the law which we are not obeying perfectly, Jesus has obeyed perfectly and through his perfect obedience, we are saved from our sin.
