Sermon Passage: 1 Samuel 17:33-47
Sermon Title: What are you fighting for?
Sermon By: Pastor Davy (Youth)
Sermon Summary:

There are three reasons why David faced Goliath. It wasn’t his responsibility. It wasn’t his job to face Goliath but he did. Why?

  1. Goliath defies the armies of the Living God. It’s not often that we see anyone stand up for God’s reputation/name/glory. Back in those days, it should’ve been Saul who stood up for God. He is the King that God put in place under His laws. In the face of the Philistine giant, the Israelite giant(Saul was taller than anyone in Israel) should’ve stood up and went into battle for God’s glory. But not only was Saul the giant from Israel but he is the king that Israel asked for to go to battle for them. He is the king that was supposed to go and win victories for Israel (1 Sam 8:19-20). But rather than Saul, David, a young shepherd boy, stands up for God’s reputation and goes into battle. This is a clear contrast between the two chosen kings of Israel. Who puts God first? who does not?
  2. Faith is Now. In verse 37, David tells Saul that he has faith that the Lord will deliver him from Goliath because he has already delivered him multiple times from paws of lions and bears. Faith is why David stood to face Goliath. because the past and the future sustains our present faith. The past experiences of YHWH delivering him from the paws of lions and bears. and the future belief that YHWH will deliver him from Goliath is what gave David faith to stand up against Goliath.
  3. The Lord saves not with sword and spear but in weakness. The Lord does not require a strong warrior to win wars and battles. The Lord is mighty and great. David is introduced very casually with no grand entrance nor elaborate details of his body or his talents. David actually seems weak and small in this chapter. And that’s quite ok. Why? because God’s power is made perfect in our weakness (2 corinthians 12:8).
What are you fighting for? Are you fighting for God? Are you fighting by faith? These are important questions we should answer this week.
