Sermon Passage: 1 Samuel 5
Sermon Title: Yahweh
Sermon By: Pastor Davy (Youth)
God is a powerful God. He is Almighty and he is Above All. but how powerful is he? How mighty is our God?
Philistines found out when they took the Ark of the Covenant as their trophy of war after they defeated the Israelites in 1 Samuel 4. They took the ark of the covenant and they set it beside their gods as if Yahweh was one of their idols. And they found out that their gods could not even stand in the presence of Yahweh. the fight between two nations quickly became a “fight” between Dagon their god and Yahweh the God of Israel.
God shows them that Israel may be week and spineless but He is not. He is strong. He is mighty. and He is powerful.
And what is surprising is that the enemy of Israel acknowledges God’s power. They admit that Yahweh is Above all. That he cannot be messed with.
So they end up sending the ark of the covenant back to Israel. But what is important is that the Philistines, Israel’s enemy and thus the enemy of God, realize that God is powerful but the Israelites don’t. We will see more clearly what that means in the next few weeks. But Israelites do not acknowledge God’s power in their lives.
But do we? do we actually live as if God has influence over our lives? as if God is the powerful God of Israel? able to show himself in a burning bush? Able to split open the red sea? We should. We must. Yahweh is a powerful God.
